Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy

Overview

Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy (SBCE) is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure that uses a swallowable capsule equipped with a miniature camera to capture detailed images of the small intestine. This advanced technology helps in identifying hidden sources of gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammation, polyps, and other abnormalities that are not visible through traditional endoscopy or colonoscopy.

Procedure

During the procedure, the patient swallows a small, pill-sized capsule that travels naturally through the digestive tract. The capsule takes thousands of high-resolution images as it moves along, transmitting them wirelessly to a recording device worn by the patient. The entire process is painless and does not require sedation or hospital stay. The capsule is excreted naturally within one to two days.

Indications

Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy is typically recommended for:

  • Evaluation of unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding

  • Investigation of chronic abdominal pain or diarrhea

  • Assessment of suspected Crohn’s disease

  • Detection of small bowel tumors or polyps

  • Evaluation of iron deficiency anemia of unknown cause

Preparation & Aftercare

Patients are usually advised to fast overnight before the procedure. A bowel preparation may be prescribed to ensure clear visualization of the intestinal lining. After swallowing the capsule, normal daily activities can be resumed while the device records images. Once the capsule has passed, the doctor reviews the recorded data and provides a detailed report.

Benefits

  • Non-invasive and comfortable diagnostic method

  • Offers a complete view of the small intestine

  • No anesthesia or recovery period required

  • Provides accurate, high-definition imaging

  • Helps detect conditions missed by other tests
